Is it still your book?

Yes, and we can say that without flinching.

We don't invent your ideas. We sit with you, ask a great many questions, and record the answers. The frameworks are yours. The stories are yours. The opinions are yours, including the ones you'd rather not put in print — we'll argue for keeping those, because they're usually the best part of the book.

What we bring is structure and sentences. Most people who know something worth writing about have never written eighty thousand words in their life, and there is no shame in that. A book made this way is no less yours than a speech you delivered from notes someone helped you shape.

And if you'd rather write it yourself, write it yourself. We'll publish it, and we'll tell you honestly if the draft needs work first.

We interview you

A series of recorded conversations, usually one to two hours each. We arrive with questions. You arrive with what you know.

We agree the shape

A chapter-by-chapter outline. Nothing gets written until you have read it and changed whatever you want changed.

We draft

Chapter by chapter, sent to you as we go. You never wait three months to find out whether it sounds like you.

You steer

Two rounds of revision on every chapter are included. If a chapter doesn't sound like you, it goes back.

Not included

  • Publishing, printing or distribution — that's a separate package
  • Research we haven't scoped, such as archive work or third-party interviews
  • Unlimited rewrites after the second revision round
  • A credit for the writer, unless you choose to give one
Before you decide

Questions authors ask

Will it actually sound like me?
That's the whole job. We work from recordings of you talking, not from a brief, because the way you explain something out loud is usually closer to your writing voice than anything you'd type. The first chapter is the test. If it doesn't sound like you, we rewrite it until it does.
How long does it take?
Three to six months for most books, depending on length and how quickly you can sit for interviews. The interviews are usually the bottleneck, not the writing.
Who owns the book?
You do. Your name goes on the cover, the copyright is registered to you, and the writer has no claim to it. We don't ask for a credit and we don't ask for royalties.
Do I have to tell anyone it was ghostwritten?
No. It's your book and that's your business. Plenty of well-known books were written this way and nobody thinks less of them.
What if I don't like the draft?
Two rounds of revision on every chapter are included, and we send chapters as we finish them precisely so problems surface early. If we're three chapters in and it isn't working, we'd rather stop and talk than keep writing.
Can you write fiction?
Yes, though it works differently. Fiction needs more from you at the outline stage, because plot and character can't be extracted from an interview the way expertise can.
